Salinity effects on protein content, lipid peroxidation, pigments, and proline in Paulownia imperialis (Siebold & Zuccarini) and Paulownia fortunei (Seemann & Hemsley) grown in vitro Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ayala-Astorga,Gloria Irma; Alcaraz-Meléndez,Lilia.
We evaluated the effects of saline stress on soluble proteins, lipid peroxidation (TBAR), chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, β-carotene, violaxanthin, and proline in Paulownia imperialis and Paulownia fortunei plants grown in vitro. When the propagated plants reached a determined size, they were transferred aseptically to WPM culture medium containing different sodium chloride concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 160 mM) and were sampled at 15 and 30 days. Proline content was determined at 30 days after transfer only. Protein concentration significantly decreased with the highest salt levels in P. imperialis compared to controls in which no sodium chloride was added. In both P. imperialis and P. fortunei, lipid peroxidation significantly increased at...

White mold detection in common beans through leaf reflectance spectroscopy REA
Machado,Marley L.; Pinto,Francisco de A. C.; Paula Junior,Trazilbo J. de; Queiroz,Daniel M. de; Cerqueira,Ozires de A. T..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify wavelengths based on leaf reflectance (400-1050 nm) to estimate white mold severity in common beans at different seasons. Two experiments were carried out, one during fall and another in winter. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was used to establish a set of wavelengths that better estimates the disease severity at a specific date. Therefore, observations were previously divided in two sub-groups. The first one (calibration) was used for model building and the second subgroup for model testing. Error measurements and correlation between measured and predicted values of disease severity index were employed to provide the best wavelengths in both seasons. The average indexes of each experiment were of 5.8% and...

Деградация пигментов у Spirulina platensis (Nordst.) Geitl. в условиях голодания по фосфору IBSS Repository
Геворгиз, Р. Г.; Головня, Ю. Н..

Synechococcus elongatus Nägeli IBSS Repository
Акимов, А. И.; Ефимова, Т. В..

Genetic diversity of the harmful family Kareniaceae (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in France, with the description of Karlodinium gentienii sp. nov.: A new potentially toxic dinoflagellate ArchiMer
Nezan, Elisabeth; Siano, Raffaele; Boulben, Sylviane; Six, Christophe; Bilien, Gwenael; Cheze, Karine; Duval, Audrey; Le Panse, Sophie; Quere, Julien; Chomerat, Nicolas.
The family Kareniaceae is mostly known in France for recurrent blooms of Karenia mikimotoi in the Atlantic, English Channel, and Mediterranean Sea and for the unusual green discoloration in the saltwater lagoon of Diana (Corsica) caused by Karlodinium corsicum in April 1994. In terms of diversity, this taxonomic group was long overlooked owing to the difficult identification of these small unarmored dinoflagellates. In this study, thanks to the molecular characterization performed on single cells from field samples and cultures, twelve taxonomic units were assigned to the known genera Karenia, Karlodinium and Takayama, whereas one could not be affiliated to any described genus. The molecular phylogeny inferred from the D1–D2 region of the LSU rDNA showed...

We combined the use of pigments, fatty acids and sterols as biomarkers of the seasonal variation in food sources of the great scallop Pecten maximus. From March to October 2011, on a biweekly to twice-weekly basis, scallops and seawater from the water column and the water-sediment interface were collected in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France). Pigment compositions in the seawater and in the stomach and rectum content of the scallops were analyzed by HPLC. Fatty acids and sterols from digestive gland (DG) tissue were analyzed by gas chromatography. Potential relationships between the temporal proportion of each marker in the environment and in the digestive tract were tested using multivariate analysis. Proportions of diatoms and Dinophyceae biomarkers...

The performance of microwaves irradiation (MAE and VMAE) to extract pigments from two marine microalgae was compared to conventional processes (cold and hot soaking and ultrasound-assisted extraction). Pigments were quantified by RP-HPLC and extraction performance was assessed regarding rapidity, reproducibility and extraction yields. Scanning electron microscopy was used at all extraction steps to assess the impact of the process on microalgal cell integrity. Freeze-drying and pigments extraction preserved microalgae cell integrity (except sonication) and evoked agglutination in superposed cells layers. All processes performed on Dunaliella tertiolecta (chlorophyte) lead to rapid pigments extraction, and equivalent pigments extraction yields, the absence...

Antiproliferative Activity of Cyanophora paradoxa Pigments in Melanoma, Breast and Lung Cancer Cells ArchiMer
Baudelet, Paul-hubert; Gagez, Anne-laure; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Juin, Camille; Bridiau, Nicolas; Kaas, Raymond; Thiery, Valerie; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Picot, Laurent.
The glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa (Cp) was chemically investigated to identify pigments efficiently inhibiting malignant melanoma, mammary carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cells growth. Cp water and ethanol extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the three cancer cell lines in vitro, at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Flash chromatography of the Cp ethanol extract, devoid of c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, enabled the collection of eight fractions, four of which strongly inhibited cancer cells growth at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Particularly, two fractions inhibited more than 90% of the melanoma cells growth, one inducing apoptosis in the three cancer cells lines. The detailed analysis of Cp pigment composition resulted in the discrimination of 17 molecules, ten of...

Dunaliella tertiolecta (DT) was chemically investigated to isolate molecules inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in vitro. The potency to inhibit cell growth was used for the bio-guided fractionation and isolation of active compounds using chromatographic techniques. The DT dichloromethane extract exhibited a strong anti-proliferative activity on MCF-7 and LNCaP cells, and was further fractionated and sub-fractionated by RP-HPLC. High resolution mass spectrometry and spectrophotometric analysis unequivocally identified violaxanthin as the most antiproliferative molecule present in DT DCM extract. Violaxanthin purified from DT induced MCF-7 dose- dependent growth inhibition in continuous and discontinuous treatments, at...

Diversity in Xanthophyll Cycle Pigments Content and Related Nonphotochemical Quenching (NPQ) Among Microalgae: Implications for Growth Strategy and Ecology ArchiMer
Lacour, Thomas; Babin, Marcel; Lavaud, Johann.
Xanthophyll cycle‐related non‐photochemical quenching, which is present in most photoautotrophs, allows dissipating excess light energy. Xanthophyll cycle‐related NPQ depends principally on xanthophyll cycle pigments composition and their effective involvement in non‐photochemical quenching. Xanthophyll cycle‐related NPQ is tightly controlled by environmental conditions in a species/strain specific manner. These features are especially relevant in microalgae living in a complex and highly variable environment. The goal of this study was to perform a comparative assessment of non‐photochemical quenching ecophysiologies across microalgal taxa in order to underline specific involvement of non‐photochemical quenching in growth adaptations and strategies. We...

Photo-protective compounds in red macroalgae from Brittany: Considerable diversity in mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) ArchiMer
Lalegerie, Fanny; Lajili, Sirine; Bedoux, Gilles; Taupin, Laure; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Connan, Solène.
To cope with the biotic and abiotic stresses experienced within their environment, marine macroalgae have developed certain defence mechanisms including the synthesis of photo-protective molecules against light and particularly harmful UV radiation. The aim of this study was to screen selected red algae, a highly diverse phylogenetic group, for the production of photo-protective molecules. The pigment content and composition (i.e. chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins and carotenoids) and the composition of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in 40 species of red macroalgae collected in Brittany (France), at two distinct periods (i.e. February and July 2017). A high inter-specific variability was demonstrated in terms of pigment content and MAA...
